NANAIMO — A significant intersection upgrade on top of Rutherford hill is nearly complete.

The City’s acting manager of transportation Jamie Rose said the double-laned roundabout on Rutherford Rd. at Nelson Rd. and Linley Valley Dr. is now fully functional.

“It provides motorists, cyclists and pedestrians all with a better link to the major arterial roads like Uplands and the Island Highway,” Rose said. “It gives them more opportunities to get to and from where they’re going in a comfortable and efficient manner.”

Rose said final road markings, sidewalks and signage still need to be included.

“If we get some cooperation from the weather it should be complete in the next month or so.”

Linley Valley Dr. opened recently, linking the growing subdivision to the new roundabout.

Rose said information on using Nanaimo’s first dual-lane roundabout is listed on the City’s website and through signage at the intersection.

Rose has yet to hear opinions on how Nanaimo’s newest roundabout is working for users.

The Rutherford hill roundabout is project is budgeted at $2.3 million.
