Small forest fire burns above Cameron Lake

Aug 30, 2017 | 3:01 PM

PARKSVILLE — Crews have a strong handle on a forest fire burning on a mountain range above Cameron Lake.

Dorthe Jakobsen with the Errington based Coastal Fire Centre told NanaimoNewsNOW Wednesday afternoon the blaze burning on Island Timberlands property is about three quarters of a hectare in size.

“It is considered to be held with current resources, it’s well looked after.”

Jakobsen said nine Coastal Fire Centre crews are attacking the fire discovered late Tuesday night. Jakobsen said several calls came in from people early Wednesday morning, who noticed plenty of smoke rising from above the northeast side of Cameron Lake.

A pair of helicopters that were bucketing water on the fire have been stood down, Jakobsen said.

She added it’s not known what caused the fire believed to be burning in a slash area, but said lightning is a possibility.
