NANAIMO — The father of a missing Nanaimo teenager will have to wait longer to join the search for his daughter.

Kerry Chang, 49, was scheduled to be released from a Victoria jail on Saturday, however, he’s facing serious new charges and will remain behind bars.

Fresh charges of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and forcible confinement have been laid against Chang in relation to alleged incidents in Nanaimo last November.

On Friday, a Provincial Court Judge told Chang he’s scheduled to appear in Court via video on Tuesday, adding attempts will be made to arrange a bail hearing.

Chang is the father of 16-year-old Makayla Chang, who has been missing for nearly two months.

Chang was sentenced in mid-March to 90 days in jail at the Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre in Victoria after pleading guilty to occupying a vehicle when firearms were present.

In April, Chang told CTV News Vancouver Island, “I feel very bad being in here right now, I feel that if I wasn’t in here this wouldn’t be happening because she (Makayla) would’ve been with me.”
