Science Saturday event provides learning opportunities and fun

NANAIMO — The fourth annual Science Saturday is a community celebration to promote local work in the science and technology sector.

A number of groups will be in attendance at the Departure Bay Eco-School to showcase what it is that they do best.

That includes Makerspace Nanaimo, The North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre, VIU Sturgeon Centre, other mid-island organizations, and even a group coming from Science World in Vancouver.

Event spokesperson Morgan Attwell said it’s for all ages but it’s especially engaging for kids.

“Getting their hands busy, getting them asking interesting questions and wondering about new things, and exposing them to different areas in science is part of our mission,” said Attwell. “It’s not just a chemistry lab, it’s engineering and it’s nature, and it’s all of these different disciplines.”

In the beginning the Nanaimo Science and Sustainability Society and the Departure Bay Eco-School had their own exhibits but now other community groups have joined in to expand the event.

A lot of the planned activities are centred around building, fish and wildlife.

There’s also a special presentation by Science World at 1 p.m.

Science Saturday runs Feb. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with more information available online at nanaimoscience.org.
