NANAIMO — A fire which started in an RV trailer quickly spread and significantly damaged the inside of a Nanaimo home.

The blaze started at approximately 12:20 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 24. at 673 Western Acres Rd.

Brad Wood, assistant chief of operations with Nanaimo Fire Rescue, said it took several hours to put out the fire and crews were on the scene until roughly 5:30 a.m.

Someone was inside the trailer at the time but they escaped without harm, according to Wood. The two residents inside the home also made a quick exit.

No one was hurt in the blaze, although all three people were displaced. A cat was also rescued by fire crews.

Wood emphasized the importance of smoke and fire detectors in this instance.

“Great notification on structure type fires allows the crews to get on scene quickly and mitigate any further damage,” he said.

On Sunday, Jan. 22, a cooking-related fire caused damage to a south Nanaimo basement suite in a home without working smoke alarms.

Wood said the Fire and Loss Prevention team is investigating the early-morning fire.
