Snuneymuxw Elder Ellen White appointed to Order of Canada
NANAIMO — A Snuneymuxw First Nation elder has been appointed to the Order of Canada.
It was announced on Friday that Ellen White, or Kwulasulwut (many stars), will be receiving one of Canada’s highest civilian honours.
A release from Governor General David Johnston states that White is being honoured for “her work as an Elder and community leader, and for her efforts to preserve the Hul’qumi’num language.”
White received the Order of B.C. in 2011. She was instrumental in helping form the First Nations Studies program at Vancouver Island University and served as an Elder-in-Residence for years.
