Nanaimo based Island Top Team wins 11 medals at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu event in Vancouver

VANCOUVER — Island Top Team had a strong showing in the final Canadian Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation event of the year on Saturday.

The Nanaimo based martial arts club came back with seven gold medals and four silvers from the Vancouver International Open.

Dwayne Johnston led the way, winning three gold medals and a silver.

Matt Kwan won multiple medals as well, taking home a gold and a silver.

Huthayfah Penny, and Blake Deal also captured gold and Simarjeet Kaur was a silver medalist.

Island Top Team finished in first place in the team standings for the Masters Nogi category.

2016 has been a very good year for members of the Nanaimo based club.

The club won five gold medals at a tournament in Seattle in September, and had a strong showing at a BJJF event in Las Vegas back in August.
