Legendary Howie Meeker gets Special Olympics honour

PARKSVILLE — Another in a long list of honours for Howie Meeker.

The French Creek resident is being inducted into the Special Olympics of BC Hall of Fame.

Meeker says supporting Special Olympics across Canada for more than 40-years has been extremely satisfying for him and his wife.

“Leah and I are also very much involved with BC (and Alberta) Guide Dogs, and it’s the same thing. The cure is not only so much for the person, the individual involved, but the cure is for the whole family, the cure is for the community,” says Meeker.

Meeker receives his induction plaque this Saturday at his annual golf tournament in Campbell River, which has raised $750,000 for the Special Olympics of B.C.

Meeker says being involved in Special Olympics means the world to him and the athletes.

“They don’t care if they’re first or last, but they compete like hell, they’re very, very competitive, they enjoy every minute of life. What else can you ask for?”

Meeker served in World War II before capturing four Stanley Cups as a forward with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

He’s also in the Hockey Hall of Fame as a broadcaster, as well as a member of the Order of Canada.
