UPDATE: Electrical issue caused fatal fire

Improper electrical work is being blamed for a fire that killed a senior man and his dog Thursday in Nanaimo.

The blaze, in the Petroglyph Mobile Home Park on Chase River Road, broke out just after 5 in the morning and was fully involved by the time crews arrived.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue Inspector Alan Millbank says the fire was accidental, due to an electrical cause.

“It was mostly found by the Electrical Safety Authority, but there were a lot of non-compliances with electrical work in the mobile home,” said Millbank.

Millbank says there were no working smoke alarms in the mobile home and a lot of overloaded circuits were also found.

“We had adapters plugged into power bars, plugged into wall outlets with appliances and other electrical devices plugged in. Although these didn’t result in the fire, these were also fire hazards.”

Millbank says the man and his dog were found dead in the bedroom of the trailer.

The Coroner is still investigating.
