HATE – A Strong, Powerful Word

My beautiful, loving friend – I’ll call her Upendo, (loving in Swahila) sent me an email that made me shudder. In the subject bar was the word HATE.

That was not ever something I would expect to see in the subject bar from this compassionate friend and I was almost afraid to open the email.

Here is the essence of the letter:

Not sure if you have seen or heard about this awful thing that happened on Friday night-posters plastered throughout downtown area smearing people of Jewish descent.  How someone so full of hate could decide that all of these people are tied up with something bad, just because they are Jewish is beyond me.  The even scarier part to me is whoever did this is educated enough to write using Hitler’s language.  My heart hurts tonight and I needed to vent-I am not about to go out and say anything publicly and I am sure this will stay in the media for days to come, but as someone who I highly respect and think the world of and as someone who always sees the positives, I thought as I am not feeling the love tonight, maybe you would have a spin on this for me that I just can’t seem to find.

Sad…Upendo

My response…

Oh, Updendo, I am so sorry, I had not read this and am sickened as well. I am just happy that they are not publishing the posters at least.

I don’t know if it helps but here is my slant on crap like this.

People who do this (and even smaller, less volatile things) are trying to make others look bad but in their path of destruction it is they who end up looking the fool.

Unfortunately though, we cannot know love without knowing hate, we cannot appreciate good without experiencing the bad, we cannot even know the feel of hot without knowing what cold feels like. It is these extreme opposites, the dichotomy that allow us to enjoy the full flavor of what delights and pleases us.

Perhaps this is our price to pay for the experience love, joy, beauty, serenity, compassion, empathy…

We won’t let them win and by continuing to spread good stuff, they won’t.

I feel sorry for them actually, it must be awful to be filled with hate. Yuck.

Now put on your cape and get out there and change the world, girl! Mine is at the cleaners – I think I’ll take the day off.

From the heart, Steph xo

I share this will you in the hopes that it will help you a little when you have to deal with things that seem hateful, situations that don’t make any sense, and people who can’t find seem to love anywhere.

Put your cape on and go do good, anyway!

Best, Steph
