Nanaimo RCMP preach safety for Halloween

Oct 31, 2017 | 11:29 AM

NANAIMO — On the eve of what will be a busy night in many Nanaimo neighbourhoods, RCMP is passing along several safety tips.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said motorists have to be aware of trick-or-treaters flooding the streets Tuesday night.

“Hundreds of kids are inundating our streets and they’re not necessarily following the rules of the road…you have to go very slow.”

He said children should avoid consistently crossing roads and recommends parents carry a flashlight with extra batteries.

O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW children falling down and injuring themselves on Halloween because their costumes don’t fit properly is by no means uncommon.

“The costumes are too long or the mask is impeding their sight, so parents have to really take a close look at them.”

He said having a visible costume improves safety as well.

Also, O’Brien noted another critical safety tip is reviewing all candy and avoiding homemade treats.

“If there’s any wrappers that look like they’re contaminated or open throw it out immediately.”

He said fireworks are illegal to possess and light off within City of Nanaimo limits, unless approval was granted in advance from Nanaimo Fire Rescue.

O’Brien said there will be extra RCMP officers assigned to Nanaimo streets for Halloween night.
