Oct 25, 2017 | 3:20 PM

QUALICUM BEACH — A call is being made to commuters who may have witnessed a fatal police-involved shooting in Qualicum Beach.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is piecing together the case of a distressed 35-year-old man who got in a struggle with police and was fatally shot on the side of the Inland Island Highway in Qualicum Beach.

It happened on Thursday, Oct. 12 at about 6 a.m. on the side of the road in the northbound lanes near the Corcan Rd. overpass.

IIO Spokeswoman Shannon Brennan said anyone who could help advance the investigation is asked to come forward.

“We’re asking anyone who saw, heard or reported this incident to contact our witness line at 1-855-445-8477.”

RCMP said the man stabbed himself inside a vehicle, which was followed by 911 calls of the man running down the highway and someone trying to restrain him.

Two RCMP officers were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries following the incident.

The IIO was alerted and took over the investigation.

“Since that time we’ve been interviewing witnesses, collecting physical evidence, interviewing officers and reviewing medical reports,” Brennan said.
