UPDATE: Nanaimo woman in critical condition after being pinned under own car

Sep 21, 2017 | 10:53 PM

NANAIMO — RCMP confirmed an elderly woman was taken to Victoria Hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries after being trapped under her own car.

“It’s quite bizarre and very tragic,” Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW. “All we know at this point, the car was not turned on and for whatever reason the car started to roll back. She was pinned underneath and dragged down her driveway.”

O’Brien said if it hadn’t been for the neighbours who quickly assisted the woman, she could have been trapped for some time.

She’s currently in critical condition.

EARLIER: An elderly woman is in serious condition in hospital after neighbours say she was pinned under her own car in a north Nanaimo neighbourhood.

A neighbour, who did not wish to be identified, said he and another man were the first to find the woman pinned under the passenger side front tire of her car in the middle of Monterey Dr., near Cheyenne Pl. around 8 p.m. Thursday.

He told NanaimoNewsNOW the driver’s side door was open and it appeared the woman was possibly dragged down her driveway and into the road. He said the two men jacked the car up and comforted the woman until first responders arrived. “She was straddling the front tire and her head was towards the back,” the man said.

A Nanaimo RCMP officer on scene called the incident a “single vehicle collision with a pedestrian.” He said the woman’s condition is considered serious and they’re waiting to learn the full scope of her injuries.

The officer would not confirm any details of the incident, saying it was too early in the investigation. More information is expected to be released in the morning.
