Clippers shutout Bulldogs 3-0, extend lead for last playoff spot

Jan 21, 2017 | 6:42 AM

NANAIMO – It was the Clippers most important game of the year and they responded accordingly on Friday.

Nanaimo shutout Alberni Valley 3-0 at Frank Crane Arena to take a three point lead for the final playoff spot in the Island Division.

Goalies Brody Claeys and Evan DeBrouwer were perfect in the first period but the Clippers turned up the heat in the second.

David Silye beat Claeys five hole and Jamie Collins put in a seeing eye shot before the second period was five minutes old.

Nanaimo never looked back after that.

When Sean Buchanan scored a power play goal in the first minute of the third period the Clippers put the game on lock down.

Nanaimo outshot Alberni Valley 42-22 with Evan DeBrouwer getting his second shutout of the season.

It was a spirited game but the Clippers kept their discipline going 1/5 on the power play and 1/1 on the PK.

The same two teams finish their double header Saturday at Weyerhaeuser Arena.

Nanaimo is 1-0-0-1 in Port Alberni this season.
