Ford ‘F’ series trucks dominate list of most stolen vehicles in western Canada

NANAIMO — The Insurance Bureau of Canada is out with its list of the most commonly stolen vehicles in western Canada.

All of the top 10 are trucks from the Ford ‘F’ series.

Dan Service with IBC says especially with pre-2007 trucks, owners should take precautions.

“Any products that you have, you want to take them out of your vehicle. You want to make sure the vehicle is locked and parked in a lit area or if you have a garage, inside the garage. Or use an immobilizer, something that’s electronic or fits on to a steering wheel,” said Service.

Here in B.C. the top ten is a bit more diverse, and RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien says the one theme in Nanaimo is thieves targeting older model vehicles.

“These are the Toyota’s and the Honda’s 10 to 15 years old. Locks are easily manipulated, so we really stress that the owners have to be aware of that and try to find a wheel lock or have an alarm installed, and especially not leaving any valuables in the car,” said O’Brien.

RCMP Corporal Jesse Foreman says they’ve seen thieves target older model ‘F’ series trucks in the Oceanside area.

“Currently we have four men in custody. They’ve all done time in the past for stealing these heavy duty Ford pick-up trucks. There’s about five men in our area that definitely like to steal this brand of truck. They are very easy to steal,” said Foreman.

The ICBC list of stolen vehicles has the Honda Civic, Honda Accord and Ford ‘F’ 350 as the top three brands being targeted by thieves in British Columbia.
