NANAIMO — Police in Nanaimo are asking for help tracking down a suspect after a Vancouver Island University student was robbed at knife-point.

Mounties say the young man was taking pictures on Addison Road, a small lane that runs between Third Street and the Nanaimo Parkway up to VIU’s student residences, around 4 p.m. on Nov. 3. The student told police a man in his late 20’s or early 30’s came up, pulled out a knife and demanded his belongings. Police say the suspect stole a camera, camera bag, a wallet and a cell phone and took off down Addison Lane towards Buttertubs Marsh.

A police dog was brought in within minutes but no trace was found. Police says the suspect has a slim build, dark coloured eyes and was wearing a black hoody, blue jeans and brown works boots. They say he was carrying a black backpack and had a blue bandana covering the lower part of his face.

The suspect was also seen talking to a woman on the trail above Wessex Lane before the robbery. The robbery prompted an alert to be sent out Thursday evening to staff and students via the school’s emergency alert app.
