Six years after a near fatal accident, Nanaimo’s Gus Thorne is a national champion lawn bowler
NANAIMO — He lost his sight, he was in a coma for three months, and as Gus Thorne puts it – he had to re-learn everything.
The 35-year-old was in a near fatal motorcycle accident in 2010. On his long road to recovery he discovered lawn bowling. Thorne takes a positive approach to everything he does. After playing football, rugby and lacrosse in his younger days he knew he wanted to get back to playing sports again somehow.
“Blindness is just a characteristic I have now. It doesn’t define me and I don’t want to live with low expectations. You can do anything as long as you put effort into it,” said Thorne.
Three years ago he started lawn bowling, and with the help of his coach Don Sherry, Gus found he was very good at it. So good that he qualified for provincials this past August and won. Then Thorne went to the Nationals, which were held in Delta, and became the Men’s Singles Canadian Champion. He competed against four other blind bowlers in the B1 category and won, despite the rest of the field each having more than 10 years of experience.
