MERVILLE — RCMP report the highway reopened in both directions around 4 p.m.

EARLIER:

Police say a pedestrian is dead after a hit and run north of Courtenay.

Comox Valley RCMP responded to a call of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle on Highway 19A in Merville Tuesday morning at 5:30 a.m.

Police are looking for the vehicle involved, which headed southbound towards Courtenay and would have sustained heavy front-end damage.

RCMP Constable Rob Gardner says the highway will be closed for several hours as investigators try to piece together what happened.

“This investigation is still in it’s early stages,” said Gardner. “Our members are still on scene with assistance from North Island Traffic Services.”

Gardner says they don’t have any information about the victim yet or a description of a suspect vehicle.

If you have any information contact the Comox Valley RCMP at 250-338-1321 and give the file number which is 2016-13815.
