VIU teams undefeated, as soccer clubs prepare for home opener

NANAIMO — The VIU Mariners haven’t experienced defeat yet in either of the two sports that are underway.

Last weekend the golf team was the big story, with a win at the first PACWEST tournament in Abbotsford.

As a team the Mariners shot 589, one stroke better than Camosun.

VIU was led by Dallas Jones, who led the field with a two-day total of 139.

As the team prepares for the second tournament of the season in Kelowna, Jones is full of confidence, despite never playing at the course he will see on Saturday and Sunday.

“I played the Quail a few years ago but I’ve never actually played the Bear.  It’ll be a new course for me, but I’ve played a couple of Jack Nichlaus designs.  So I kind of have an idea what it’ll be like,” said Jones.

After a weekend of road games for the VIU soccer teams they return home to Merle Logan Field on Saturday and Sunday.

The men had a 2-0 win over Douglas and a 1-1 draw with Langara, while the Women had two draws, 5-5 with Douglas and 2-2 with Langara.

Chloe Gummer had an outstanding debut for the Mariners scoring a hat trick in the Douglas match.

For their efforts last week Jones and Gummer have been named the VIU Male and Female Athletes of the Week.

This Saturday VIU is home to Capilano starting at 1 p.m. and then on Sunday Quest visits at noon.

Sports Information Director Brent Dunlop is looking forward to seeing the soccer teams back on the field.

“We’ve got big events planned,” said Dunlop. “Lots of music and fun and games at halftime, it should be quite a show.”

Vancouver Island University has set the PACWEST standard for athletics over the past eight seasons.

The Mariners have held on to the Aggregate Trophy as the school with the best overall performances in all of their competitive athletics.
