Lantzville approves pipe to connect to Nanaimo water system

LANTZVILLE — A key step forward towards much needed water supply for the District of Lantzville.

Lantzville council has agreed to pay $800,000 for the construction of a pipe to tap into Nanaimo’s water system in the city’s north-end.

Lantzville Mayor Colin Haime was among three councillors who voted against the plan, not because he’s opposed to water, he says, but because of a lack of clarity on who gets the new water and how a $1.3-million connection fee will be paid.

“Currently there is no identified source, there is no financial plan directly identifying who is to pay that number,” says Haime.

Haime says according to staff, a pipe installation tender will be issued shortly and the work done by the end of the year.

Two years ago, a water agreement between Lantzville and Nanaimo cleared the way for 225 Lantzville homes to receive Nanaimo water, along with 50 new connections a year for the next 20-years.

That agreement comes with an additional 20-year renewal option.

Haime says approximately 890 Lantzville homes are on the District’s community water system, while 350-400 homes rely on private wells.
