Star Trek museum moves from Vulcan to Dinosaur Capital of the World

VULCAN, Alta. — The owners of a Star Trek museum are moving their enterprise out of Vulcan, Alta., to a place where mostly dinosaurs have boldly gone before.

Devan Daniels and Michael Mangold tell radio station CHQR their Trekcetera Museum just isn’t getting enough business in the tiny town which has tried to capitalize on having the same name as the home planet of Mr. Spock.

So they’re moving to nearby Drumheller, a larger community which bills itself as the “Dinosaur Capital of the World” and boasts a plethora of T-Rex and brontosaurus replicas as well as the Tyrell Museum of Palaeontology.

The pair say it’s a business decision to move to a place where they hope they can “live long and prosper.”

Trekcetera, a collection of costumes and memorabilia, had been one of several Star Trek attractions in Vulcan for the last three years.

Jason Schneider of Vulcan’s tourism society says it’s hard to see the business move on but he wishes the owners luck, adding visitors can still enjoy a lot of Star Trek stuff in his town.

Daniels says while some might find the move highly illogical, they just weren’t getting the year-round traffic they need for their business to thrive.

“Here in Vulcan it’s very seasonal, so we’re very busy in the summer,” he says. “But in the winter, though we still get people visiting from all over the world, the business is so limited. We need to move to a place where we have a year-round influx of tourist traffic.”

This year is the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, which started as a television series about the adventures of a crew of space explorers and became a multibillion-dollar media and marketing empire.
