NANAIMO — A rare sprinAg snowfall comprising of wet, heavy flakes and subsequent transmission errors are causing numerous power outages.

As of mid-morning on Sunday, April 10, over 28,000 BC Hydro customers in the Parksville and Qualicum regions had their lights off due to a mixture of downed lines, trees across lines or transmission circuit failures.

The outages extended down into Nanoose Bay, Lantzville and parts of north Nanaimo at points Sunday morning.

BC Hydro has crews either assigned or on site to many spots in order correct the outages, with estimates for power being restored ranging from 11:30 a.m. to no estimates being available.

Light rain and snow began falling overnight, with many in the central Island waking up to a dusting of snow on their lawns and sidewalks.

Little snow is sticking to area roads outside of higher elevations and inland.

The rain is expected to subside through the day, with the forecasted high for the Nanaimo region around eight degrees Sunday.

A further blast of wet flurries is in the forecast overnight into Monday, April 10 with more showers and single digit daytime highs in the long term forecast.
