NANAIMO — B.C. Girl Guides are now on an even playing field when it comes to high school graduation credits, thanks to a Ladysmith girl who lobbied for change.

A BC Ministry of Education policy adjustment takes affect this month, meaning Girl Guides in the province will receive double graduation credits for certain guiding awards.

Kylar, a Ladysmith Girl Guide, felt 12 to 17-year-old members weren’t being properly acknowledged for their extra curricular work, according to the provincial commissioner of Girl Guides of Canada.

“This is a great example of her identifying an issue that needed to be resolved, identifying a solution and talking to the right people,” Diamond Isinger, the Provincial Commissioner for Girl Guides of Canada told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Kylar inquired about more scholastic credits last Spring and Isinger said research showed other youth groups traditionally catered to males received significantly more high school credits for their awards.

The Education Ministry agreed and signed off on boosted credits for B.C. Girl Guides this week.

Isinger said increased scholastic incentives for Girl Guide members will foster personal growth through new challenges and experiences.

“While also giving a lot of volunteer hours and time to your community. This is a really important way for us to acknowledge these girls for the contributions and the work that they invest.”

Four graduation credits now apply to an award available in each of the 12-14 and 15-17-year-old age categories for Girl Guides in B.C.

“This shows there’s another benefit to being a member of Girl Guides,” Isinger said.

18,000 Girl Guides are enrolled in B.C.
