Water restrictions now in effect throughout Nanaimo-area and mid-Island

NANAIMO — Water restrictions lasting all summer are now in effect in Nanaimo and the surrounding area.

Stage 2 restrictions began Wednesday, May 1 and will remain in place until further notice throughout the City of Nanaimo, Parksville and much of the Regional District.

Residents are now urged to water their lawns from 7 to 10 in the morning or evening, every other day.

Which day is indicated by house numbers. Even-numbered houses can water on even-numbered days and vice versa for odd-numbered houses.

Drip irrigation and micro irrigation systems aren’t affected, since they use as little water as possible.

Both the City and the Regional District say consistent watering restrictions every year throughout the mid-Island maintains a focus on conserving precious water.

The District of Lantzville will start stage 1 restrictions on May 1, limiting watering times to between 7 and 10 either in the morning or night every day. The Town of Qualicum Beach will follow in the middle of May.

Depending on weather conditions throughout the summer, affected areas may increase to stage 3 or 4 restrictions.
