MARCH 23, 1933 ~ JANUARY 2, 2019 (AGE 85)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Harry Douglas (“Doug”) McCausland on January 2, 2019 in Victoria, B.C.
Doug was born on March 23, 1933 in Boissevain, Manitoba. After graduating from Boissevain High School in 1950, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture from the University of Manitoba . After marrying Carol Sanderson on October 7, 1960, he moved to Guelph, Ontario where he earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree from Ontario Veterinary College in 1964. In 1965, Doug and Carol moved to Abbotsford, B.C., where Doug was the head of the provincial government’s animal laboratory until he started an innovative and successful veterinary practice that provided animal health management services for commercial farmers in the Fraser Valley. Doug and Carol stayed in Abbotsford for forty years. In 2005, they moved to the community of Craig Bay in Parksville, B.C., where they enjoyed precious friendships and beautiful scenery. They happily hosted family and friends in their last years in this picturesque location.
While Doug’s practice was a time-consuming endeavour, he also had a passion for community service. Doug served on both the Abbotsford School Board and University of the Fraser Valley board for many years as well as being the chairman of the Abbotsford Community Foundation. For his long and involvement in the Abbotsford Rotary Club, Doug received two Paul Harris awards and in 2002, the year of Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee, he received the prestigious Golden Jubilee Medal for his decades of community service in Abbotsford.
Doug was a diligent, accomplished yet humble man who gave thanks to God for his life and success. He was a great sports enthusiast, playing golf, racquetball and curling for many years; and watching major league baseball, football and hockey. He was loved by family, friends, and colleagues for being a decent, hardworking, self-sacrificing and extremely caring man.
