Hans Walter Lussenburg – April 28, 1954 to October 21, 2024
In Loving Memory of Hans Walter Lussenburg It is with heavy hearts and fond memories that we announce the passing of Hans, a man who filled every room he entered—not only with his stature but with his humour and warmth. Hans was larger than life, a bit like the iconic “Uncle Buck”—loving, generous, and always quick with a joke to lighten the load. Those who knew him remember him as a loyal friend, a caring brother and uncle, and a good-natured soul with an endless supply of wit. Although a forester by training, Hans proudly served as an officer in the Navy, where his strong spirit and sense of duty were evident. He transitioned that marine knowledge to the Arctic where he became an integral part of a team tasked with managing sea ice around drilling platforms in the Beaufort Sea. After those adventures he once again found peace and purpose in the woods with the BC Forest Service, working in silviculture and, in quieter moments, capturing nature’s beauty through his art. He was known not only for his talent but for his unwavering kindness and encouragement to other aspiring artists. He is survived by his brother (Jos), sister (Selma), their families and his step brothers; Matthew, Andrew and Ian (Johnson). All will miss his presence and big heart. A celebration of Hans’ life will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, November 30th at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (2424 Glen Eagle Crescent) in Nanaimo. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Trillion Trees project (https://trilliontrees.org/), a cause close to Hans’ heart, to help re-grow forests which are needed now more than ever. Though he has left our side, Hans leaves a legacy of laughter, service, and kindness that will continue to grow, like the trillion trees he hopes will flourish for generations to come.
