John Kondas (Cap’n John, Gentleman John), of New Westminster and Qualicum Beach passed away November 7, 2019 peacefully in hospital with his loving family at his side.
Born in New Westminster on March 1, 1937, to his parents Janos and Magda who had immigrated from Hungary to Canada, John graduated in 1956 from NWSS and went on to UBC to study accounting and play football for the Thunderbirds.
Deciding office life was not for him, he joined the New Westminster Fire Department in 1962 where he served his community for 35 years, retiring as acting Chief in 1997.
He married the great love of his life Leone Jordan November 9 of 1963, which was a 52 year love affair until Leone’s passing in 2015.
Upon his retirement, they made Qualicum Beach their home and set down deep roots in their new community. They were involved with St. Stephen’s United Church, Moorecroft Camp, and Probus Social Club.
John lived a life of service to others, that was rich with laughter, adventure and devotion to his family and friends and he will be dearly missed. He is survived by his children Nena and Ward (Erin), and four grandchildren Kia, Zoe, Zak and Vivian.
A Memorial Service will be held for all whose lives he touched Saturday, November 16th at 2 PM at St Stephen’s United Church, 150 Village Way, Qualicum Beach, BC. Donations may be made to the Burn Fund Centre.
