Lelia Rachel Kennedy/Leedham/Morey – July 11, 1929 – May 8, 2023
Dr. Lelia Rachel Kennedy/Leedham/Morey, age 94, passed away peacefully in North Vancouver Hospice on May 8, 2023. She is survived by her two sons, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Lelia, born in Kelowna, grew up with her sisters Melba and Ruth. She enjoyed riding horses, training horses to jump, playing tennis (regional junior champion) and time outdoors with her dog and her dad. After the birth of her eldest son (Christopher James) and death of her first husband Jim (James Robert Leedham) in 1953, Lelia moved to Vancouver and began her post secondary education at UBC. She obtained a BA and MA in psychology, and started her teaching career there. After marrying her second husband Frank Morey, moving to Calgary, and the birth of her youngest son (Ian), Lelia then went on to earn her PhD in Psychology at the University of Sussex near Brighton. During her career, she taught at UBC, Mount Royal College in Calgary, was one of the original instructors at Malaspina College in Nanaimo and later Capilano College. She also worked with the RCMP as a grief councillor. After her retirement the later years of her life were spent; travelling, having fun with her grand kids, continuing her education at elder college, listening to music at the VSO, singing in choir(s), and in the outdoors hiking with her dogs in the forests of North Vancouver. She had a private practice as a clinical psychologist, and also became a Marriage Commissioner, marrying close to 100 couples. Lelia will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her. Lelia was buried in Kelowna with Jim, her first husband, on May 31, 2023 in a private ceremony. A celebration of her life will be held on July 15, 2023 at the Boal Chapel in North Vancouver.
