Berit Armstrong, August 5, 1922 – September 18, 2025
It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of Berit Emilie Armstrong (née Rasmussen), born on August 5, 1922, in Oslo, Norway. Berit passed away peacefully on September 18, 2025 in Nanaimo, BC, at the remarkable age of 103. At the age of eight, Berit immigrated to Canada with her family and grew up in Temiskaming, Quebec. During the Second World War, she worked as a translator at the military base, Camp Little Norway near Huntsville, Ontario and for the Norwegian Consulate in Toronto. After the war, Berit moved to Prince Rupert, where she met and married Allan Armstrong. The couple later settled in Nanaimo, British Columbia, where they built a loving home and a rich life in their community. Part of her rich legacy was Dolphin Beach, which she loved, spending many wonderful summers at the family cabin. She worked in the mortgage department at Nanaimo Realty under Frank Ney. She was also an active member of Gyro and deeply involved with her church community, forming lifelong friendships and connections. Though she never sought recognition, she was a quiet champion for those around her. Berit will be remembered for her spirited wisdom, her sharp wit, her love of gardening, and her delicious baking—especially her famous Nanaimo bars. She nurtured her family and friendships across generations with warmth and grace. She is survived by children Ginny (Scott), Murray (Parm), Blake (Kellie) and Kelli (Gary); nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, as well as many close friends. We would also like to thank AgeCare Malaspina and its staff for their care and support throughout. For those who knew her well, Berit will be making a stop‑over on Pluto, where she’ll be happily sipping gin and playing her ukulele while awaiting God’s decision about her final destination. Berit’s service was held on September 23, 2025. In lieu of flowers, we encourage donations to the BC SPCA (https://spca.bc.ca/).
