Christmas on the Street bringing holiday cheer to Nanaimo’s homeless and low-income families

Dec 22, 2018 | 10:25 PM

NANAIMO — The giving season will carry on through Boxing Day for Nanaimo’s homeless and struggling families.

Christmas on the Street, held on the alley driveway from Milton to Finlayson St., will offer a hot meal and support for anyone in need on Wednesday, Dec. 26.

It’s run by the same organization behind Stone Soup, which provides free meals from a home along the alley driveway every night.

Organizer Tanya Hiltz said they want to bring smiles and joy to the often tough holiday season.

This year, roughly 150 backpacks filled with supplies like socks, underwear and toiletries will be provided.

Hiltz said it’s important to provide more than a turkey meal.

“It’s too expensive for someone on the street to go out and buy makeup and shaving cream. It’s just something they don’t think of…and we just want to make them feel special.”

Given the large number of people who’ve recently moved off the street and into temporary housing, Hiltz said they need to support and lend a hand to everyone who might now be trying to get their lives back on track.

“They have a roof over their head, but they’re still unsettled. You have to be there to help them through any issues anytime you can. And this is why we do Christmas in the Street and Stone Soup. It’s just to be there to try and support them.”

The festivies get underway at 12 p.m.
