Another 45 days in jail for Nanaimo man for repeated fishing violations

Sep 8, 2016 | 9:51 AM

NANAIMO — A 12 year fishing ban for a crab fisherman from Nanaimo.

This after Scott Steer was caught ignoring a court order.

Steer was already banned from any vessel other than a B.C. ferry when he was arrested in April on his own boat the Holly V.

His original conviction dates back to September 2013 when he was convicted of landing thousands of kilograms of halibut at a time when stocks were low.

At that time he was fined and jailed for six months.

Now a B-C Supreme court judge in Nanaimo has forced him to forfeit his vessel, increased the man’s ban on fishing from 10 to 12 years and ordered Steer to spend another 45 days in jail.

According to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans it’s unusual for someone to be given jail sentences for fishing violations.
