Thomas (Tom) Matthew Hickey, January 5, 1959 – July 11, 2026

In Memory of Thomas (Tom) Matthew Hickey January 5, 1959 – July 11, 2026 Tom passed away unexpectedly at the age of 67 after enjoying one of his favourite activities—a beautiful bike ride shared with a good friend. His family takes comfort in knowing his final day was filled with sunshine, laughter, and adventure. Born in Vancouver, B.C. Tom was raised in Edmonton, AB by his supportive parents, Helen and Barney Hickey (both deceased). He is survived by his loving family: wife Anita, daughter Jessica (Simon), sister Donna Belley (Dave), Lavern and Frank Hillier (parents-in-law), sisters-in-law Cindy Page (Darcy), Allison Thompson (Corey, deceased), and Teri Thompson. Nieces and nephew include Lindsay Sparrow (Brett), Ashley (Thain), Krista, Bailey, Alexander, Kirsten (Andrew), and Jocelyn. He was also excited to welcome grand nephews, James, Rennie, and Lucas (deceased). Tom earned a Bachelor of PE from the University of Alberta and later completed his MBA at Western Washington University. He dedicated his career to Parks and Recreation, serving the communities of Port Alberni, Whistler, Powell River, and Nanaimo, where he concluded his career as General Manager of Community Services. Tom valued integrity and fairness and genuinely cared for people. As such, he enjoyed going to work each day. Tom and Anita built a life centered on family, friendship, kindness, adventure, and respect for the environment. Jessica was a bright light in Tom’s life, carrying forward so many of his best qualities. Following retirement in 2016, Tom and Anita divided their time between Vancouver Island and Yuma, AZ, where they continued to form lasting friendships. Tom embraced life through golf, tennis, cycling, skiing, snorkelling, table tennis, hockey, and playing cards. Recently he was passionate about playing in a garage band in Nanaimo and being a founding member of the Feral Kats in Yuma. Performances raised funds for the Humane Society of Yuma. Anita proudly called him her “International Rock Star.” Tom will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, optimism, sense of humour, and the lasting impact he had on those who knew him. The family thanks everyone who helped to make his life amazing. As per Tom’s wishes, no public service will be held. Those wishing to honour his memory are encouraged to celebrate life by spending time with those they love.
