Clippers offence goes cold in loss to Grizzlies

NANAIMO — The Clippers streak of ten straight games with a point came to an end against the Victoria Grizzlies.

Nanaimo’s run of 8-0-2 was stopped thanks to a 3-1 Grizzlies road win at Frank Crane Arena,

The opening minute set a tone for the game with Patrick Fortune taking a high stick and then Jack Kohlmann sprinting down the ice to make the game 1-0 for the visitors.

After a review the Grizzlies were given a four minute penalty on the play and shortly after a successful kill Maddux Martin converted a passing play in tight on Nanaimo goalie Eliot Seguin-Lescarbeau.

The Clippers only goal came on a second period breakaway by Hayden Fechner, it was his team leading 23rd and upped his point streak to eight games.

Victoria added a late five on three goal in the third period from Artur Gross to up the score to 3-1.

Nanaimo outshot Victoria 28-26 while going 0/7 on the man advantage and 4/5 killing penalties.

Grizzlies netminder Mikus Vecvanags was selected as the game’s first start with 27 saves.

It was a night where the Clippers missed their coach Colin Birkas and forward Charles Beland due to illness and were without the services of Caden Okovita who was serving the first game of a two game suspenson.

The Clippers and Grizzlies will play four times in March including a home and home series starting in Nanaimo on March 6.

Nanaimo will wrap up the month of February with a road game in Powell River on Feb. 28.
