New central Nanaimo light-signalled intersection about to open

NANAIMO — A new intersection is about to open on a busy Nanaimo corridor as the City’s Midtown Gateway project enters its final year of construction.

In a release, the City of Nanaimo stated the traffic signals at the new Bowen Rd./Boxwood Rd./Beban Parkway intersection will be activated on Wednesday to alert road users in advance of the light-signalled opening a week later on Wednesday, Jan 22, which includes crossings for non-vehicular users.

The City stated the new Beban Parkway road will provide access to the newly created Beban Plaza Lane and pedestrian path provides more direct access to Beban Plaza via the new intersection from any travel direction.

The City opened up a new section of road in the area in September, extending Boxwood Rd. from Northfield Rd, creating a brand new Powder Works Rd. link near the end of Rosstown Rd., which is blocked off at Beban Rd.

The City said construction work will continue in the area once the new roads are open, and they ask motorists to drive with care and obey all construction and traffic control signs until the project is complete, expected by the end of summer.
