Clippers sweep pre-all star weekend with gritty win in Cowichan

NANAIMO — For the first time since late November, the Nanaimo Clippers have won back to back games.

On the heels of a 6-3 win hosting Powell River on Friday night, the Clippers travelled to Duncan on Saturday, Jan. 11 to visit the Cowichan Valley Capitals.

The Caps came out firing early in the first period, establishing considerable pressure and eventually the game’s first goal via Jack McAra to make it 1-0.

Nanaimo counted less than three minutes later after Elliot Perreault got out of the penalty box and teed up Carson Lesiuk alone in front of the net for a 1-1 game, on Lesiuk’s fifth goal of the season.

Cowichan re-took the lead in the final minute of the period for a 2-1 advantage after 20 minutes.

Nanaimo, again, countered on a powerplay at 3:14 with Cole Lonsdale notching his 18th goal of the season for a 2-2 game.

The game remained tied until late in the period, with Gavin Giesbrecht beating goaltender Chazz Nixon to make it 3-2.

But again, Nanaimo countered, and quickly.

The Clippers tied the game at three, again on the powerplay, through Luke Lavery’s 12th of the season, scoring in close and capping a nice feed from Cole Lonsdale and Connor DeTurris.

Into the third period and the Clippers earned their first lead of the game through Chase Hull, who was on the receiving end of a beautiful play by Callus Pierce who tracked down a puck and fed Patrick Fortune to the side of the net.

He drew out the goaltender and found Hull to shoot into an open net for his seventh of the season and a 4-3 lead.

Dylan Kinch scored on an empty net breakaway after the puck bounced over a Cowichan defenceman’s stick deep inside the final minute for a 5-3 win.

The wins against Powell River and Cowichan this weekend are the Clippers’ first back to back wins since games against Powell River and Cowichan on Nov. 17 and Nov. 20 respectively.

The Clippers improve to 14-17-2 and sit just four points back of Langley for 7th place in the Coastal Division standings, with a game in hand.

Next action for the team comes Jan. 24 in Powell River, as the BCHL takes a weekend break for its All-Star festivities in Salmon Arm.
