Alberni Aquatic Centre to cost $68 million

After a year of surveys and discussions, regional district leaders received the final report on a proposed new aquatic centre.
After collating design survey results, consulting group HCMA architecture said the pool as planned would cost more than $68 million.
The facility with a 25metre-long 6-lane lap pool, leisure area with a lazy river, waterslide and wave pool along with a hottub, steam room and fitness centre would cost $45-million to build, and have $14-million in soft costs with a $10-million contingency included in the estimate.
The aquatic centre would cost $2-million a year to maintain, and land costs aren’t included in the estimate since a site still has to be determined.
Yesterday’s discussion at the Alberni Valley Aquatics Advisory Committee now moves to the larger ACRD Board of Directors before a project referendum, possibly followed by a borrowing referendum.
The project could go to tendering in 2025/26 with construction beginning in the fall of 2026.
