Rock slide closes Hwy. 4 between Oceanside and Port Alberni

PARKSVILLE — It’s a major hiccup for holiday travelers.

A rock slide along Hwy. 4 at Cameron Lake, near the site of a summer wildfire, has again closed traffic along the lone route connecting Port Alberni and Tofino/Ucluelet, with the rest of Vancouver Island.

Drive BC said in a social media post a geological assessment was completed overnight and crews have moved into a clean up phase on site.

A further update the situation at 12 p .m. Tuesday, Dec. 26.

The closure impacts areas around Cathedral Grove, for a stretch of roughly 10.4 kilometres. No detour is presently available.

After a roughly two month long span of full or partial closures, Hwy. 4 re-opened ahead of the September long weekend.

Extensive work was done along a rock face following an early June wildfire in the hills above helped send rock and other debris onto the road below, making travel unsafe.
