‘You’re covered from head to toe:’ unique event supporting Nanaimo youth programs

NANAIMO — Plan for an extra load of laundry after a fun, unique event scheduled this spring.

BGC Central Vancouver Island (BGCCVI) are hosting “Colours for Kids” on Saturday, May 27 at Beban Park in Nanaimo. The event is centred around a 4.5 kilometre race course where participants should expect to get a little messy.

Karen Love, executive director of BGCCVI, told NanaimoNewsNOW said sponsors will be lining the course with different coloured powders to shower the runners.

“The powder is family friendly, environmentally friendly and non-toxic. As the runners go by…they’ll actually get coloured powder thrown onto the white t-shirt we provide in our package. By the time you’ve done your run, you’re covered from head to toe.”

Also planned is a two kilometre mini race for kids.

Following the “races”, which start at 11 a.m., a Finish Festival will see dancing, food trucks, vendors and family activities providing lots to do for participants and onlookers alike.

Love said they’re eyeing this becoming an annual event, getting summer unofficially underway on the right note.

“It’s just to bring the community together, especially what we’ve been through the last couple of years with COVID we think it’s just a really fun event.”

Money raised through sponsorships is helping fund BGCCVI’s programming including out of school care and youth initiatives.

Registration is available through the BGC website, with a cut-off of May 23.

The event is looking for volunteers to help out on the day. Those interested can apply online.
