Construction to begin on new washroom & storage facility for improved Nanoose Bay park

NANOOSE BAY— A once neglected park now outfitted with several new sports courts will have additional features in the months ahead.

Regional District of Nanaimo board of directors recently approved a $615,000 construction bid for a new washroom building and adjoining covered gathering area at Jack Bagley Community Park (JBCP) in amenity-deprived Nanoose Bay.

The RDN’s parks department expects the upgrades will be complete before the end of this summer.

Last fall six hard surface sports courts opened, five pickleball and a tennis court, at the park off Powder Point Rd.

An accessible entrance ramp, stairs, paved plaza, picnic tables and new water line and irrigation to the adjacent playing field was also put in place.

The new infrastructure is propped up by a $500,000 federal government grant announced last July by Harjit Sajjan through his cabinet responsibilities overseeing the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada.

The new washroom building features two unisex and fully accessible washrooms, storage room and covered gathering area to over above picnic tables on a newly paved plaza.

A second planned phase to improve the park includes upgrades to the ball field, creating a half-size soccer field and enhancing parking on Powder Point R.

The second phase is funding dependant and requires approval from the RDN board.

An enhanced JBCP complements a vastly improved accessible playground unveiled at nearby Nanoose Bay Elementary School last April.
