NANAIMO — A member of the Nanaimo Mountain Bike Club (NMBC) planning to carry out trail maintenance was instead greeted by a break-in to a storage container.

Numerous hand tools and other trail building materials were discovered to be stripped from the container located in the Doumont Trails area on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 6.

NMBC vice president Morgan Deno told NanaimoNewsNOW roughly $2,000 worth of tools marked with pink tape were gone.

“Everybody loves building new trails and our community loves them, but maintaining trails is just as important. As time goes on trails erode and they require maintenance and love,” Deno said.

Some tools remained in the damaged container which are instrumental to the non-profit organization, Deno said.

He filed a report with Nanaimo RCMP Monday morning, a day after the organization made a social media post about what happened.

Deno said the community response to news of the theft was gratifying.

“We’ve had a number of people wanting to donate tools asking where they can drop off new tools for us. We’ve had offers to donate money so that we can go out and acquire new tools. It’s really encouraging, we have a very amazing outdoor community in Nanaimo.”

People wanting to donate can do so through the NMBC website, or by emailing info@nanaimomountainbikeclub.com.

NMBC maintains more than 50 trails, representing nearly 100 kilometers of pathways in the Nanaimo area, Deno said.
