Island Health continues high daily increases to end week

NANAIMO — Island Health has reported its third consecutive day of 80 or more new COVID-19 cases.

The health authority reported Friday, Oct. 1, its case increases from the past two days, including 85 on Thursday, Sept. 30 and 86 on Friday.

Despite the higher than normal increases, which cause the health authority to trend up from its previous week, the number of active cases dropped.

A total of 536 active cases are present within Island Health, a drop of 22 from Wednesday. The central Island accounts for 214 active cases, a drop of six from two days ago.

The BC Centre for Disease Control reports 33 patients in hospital for COVID-19 on Vancouver Island, 21 of whom were in intensive care.

Across B.C., 714 new cases were confirmed by public health.

Active cases sit at 6,317 in all health authorities, including 328 people hospitalized for their COVID-19 symptoms.

138 patients are admitted into ICU or critical care wards.

Data from the province showed of the 426 hospitalizations in B.C. between Sept. 16-29, nearly 71 per cent were unvaccinated. Another ten per cent only had one dose.
