9 new COVID-19 cases in Island Health after several low days

NANAIMO — The number of new COVID-19 cases in Island Health rose sharply compared to recent days.

New data on Tuesday, June 8 showed nine new cases within the health authority. Five were found in southern Vancouver Island, with only one in the central area and three to the north.

The number of active cases remained the same at 29. Central Vancouver Island continues to have eight. Two were gained in the north to make up for the two recoveries to the south.

In recent days Island Health saw as few as one new case a day.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

Across B.C. another 165 new cases were confirmed. It’s the third day of new cases under 200.

The Fraser and Interior health authorities had the most new cases.

The number of active cases hovers just above 2,000 with 203 people in hospital and 57 of those patients receiving critical care.

After a weekend of high fatalities, none were reported on Tuesday.

Approximately 72 per cent of eligible B.C. residents have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.
