Island Health suffers worst day for new COVID-19 cases

NANAIMO — The record is broken for most new COVID-19 cases in one day within Island Health.

The health authority reported 59 new cases on Friday, March 26. The previous record high was 44 in late January.

There’s currently 266 active cases, a rise of more than 30.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

B.C. suffered the second worst day ever on Friday with 908 cases. The only day with a higher number of new cases was in November, 2020 at the height of the second wave.

There’s currently more than 6,200 active cases across B.C., which is an increase of roughly 1,000 since the beginning of the week.

In contrast, the number of people requiring hospitalization dropped slightly to 294. It’s the first time in a week the number of hospitalizations has dropped below 300.

There were three new fatalities.
