Total COVID-19 case count in Island Health passes 1,000, active cases across B.C. drop

NANAIMO — Island Health’s total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases passed a major milestone.

Data from the health authority showed nine new cases were confirmed Tuesday, Jan. 5 taking the total number of cases throughout the pandemic to 1,001.

As of Tuesday, 122 are currently active with 40 in the central Vancouver Island region.

Island Health initially reported 108 active cases on Monday, Jan. 4, including 30 in the central Island region. A later correction to the health authority COVID-19 dashboard updated figures to show 117 active cases including 34 in the central region.

Eight people in Island Health are receiving treatment for COVID-19 symptoms in hospital, two of whom are in ICU. Provincially, 367 people are hospitalized including 77 in critical care.

The province reported 428 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, the lowest daily update since Dec. 26-27. A majority of the new cases were in the Lower Mainland.

Across B.C., 6,472 cases remain active which is down approximately 400 from Monday’s update.

Eight people passed away in the last 24 hours as a result of COVID-19, taking the provincial death toll to 954.
