Democrat Joe Biden projected to be 46th President of United States

NANAIMO — The United States’ electoral saga is over with a sitting president failing to be re-elected for the first time in nearly 30 years.

Democratic candidate Joe Biden is projected to be the 46th President of the United States of America after two key battleground states were declared in his favour Saturday morning.

Biden had spent a majority of the last two days on 253 electoral college votes as mail-in ballots were counted across the country. President Donald Trump had not moved from his total of 214 for several days.

The Associated Press, along with several world media outlets, called Pennsylvania for Biden Saturday morning, pushing the Biden-Kamala Harris ticket past the required 270 votes needed.

Arizona was also declared by some outlets including The Associated Press, increasing Biden’s advantage while other battleground states such as Nevada and Georgia remained too close to call.

Trump becomes the first sitting US President to not win re-election since George H.W. Bush in 1992.

It is unlikely Trump will concede the race. He has kept a constant presence on social media and maintained he won the election, claiming voter and election fraud.

Final, official results may also be contested in the courts by the Trump campaign.

Lawyers representing the President filed lawsuits in a number of US states following Tuesday’s election day to contest the results and stop ballot counting, with some being thrown out on Thursday for lack of supporting evidence.

Trump tweeted “I WON THIS ELECTION, BY A LOT!” shortly before the decisive states were called in favour of Biden.
