Island Health COVID-19 cases hold steady, 58 province-wide

NANAIMO — The number of COVID-19 cases for the Island Health region has not increased.

The province confirmed 58 new cases on Tuesday, Sept. 1, including one epi-linked case to increase the total number of people infected throughout the pandemic to 5,848. Island Health’s total of 175 remained unchanged with the number of active cases dropping to seven.

However, the number of hospitalizations grew, according to a statement from the province. There are 31 people currently in hospital across B.C. with 10 of those patients in intensive care.

As of Tuesday afternoon, 1,124 cases of COVID-19 were considered active across B.C. Over 2,600 people are under active public health watch as a result of a confirmed exposure to the virus.

One additional fatality linked to COVID-19 was confirmed, bringing the death toll from the pandemic to 209. Five have passed away in the Island Health region.

The province continued to reiterate its cornerstone messaging around community transmission, which health experts have said is very low.

“Keeping our groups small, using a mask when we are inside and in close contact with people we don’t know, giving others the space to stay safe in uncontrolled environments, washing our hands regularly and always staying home when ill – these important actions will help to protect our communities and keep our loved ones safe,” the statement read.

No new community outbreaks were detected throughout the province, however potential exposure events are continuing to be tracked.

Island Health has posted three potential exposure events at cafes in Courtenay and Sidney in mid-August. People who were at those businesses at the listed time should be monitoring themselves for symptoms.
