Canadian international Dan Moor, captain of Toronto Arrows, retires from rugby

TORONTO — Canadian international winger Dan Moor, captain of the Toronto Arrows, has retired from professional rugby.

The 29-year-old Toronto native won 14 caps for Canada and is the Arrows’ franchise leader in a number of categories.

“A great person, rugby man and leader,” said Arrows president Bill Webb.

The Arrows skipper drew tributes from former Canada captain and World Rugby Hall of Famer Al Charron (“a fine ambassador to the sport of rugby, Ontario, the Arrows and Canada”) to Rugby Canada chairman Tim Powers (“a first-class fellow”).

Moor joined the Arrows from Yorkshire Carnegie of England’s second-tier Championship in December 2018, shortly ahead of the Arrows’ inaugural season in Major League Rugby.

Moor finished his debut season in the North American league ranked ninth in the league in tries scored (7) and line-breaks (11) and was named to MLR’s second all-star team.

He leaves as the Arrows’ franchise leader in minutes played (1,574), tries scored (11), carry metres (1,345), tackle breaks (11), and offloads (11). He stands second in all-time carries (168) and line breaks (13), third in appearances (21), and fourth in dominant tackles (13).

“It was a dream come true to pull on the jersey of a professional rugby team in my hometown, and I am truly grateful for those memories,” Moor said in a statement.

“To lead this group of players — a group of people I hold in such high regard — has truly been one of the highlights of my life.”

On the international front, playing a position in which Canada had plenty of options, Moor scored four tries in 14 matches. He made his debut against Uruguay in February 2016 with his last appearance coming in July 2017 against the U.S.

Moor won several MacTier Cups and McCormick Cups with the Ontario Blues and Balmy Beach, respectively.

He captained Queen’s University and played for Oxford University — where he studied for his MBA — prior to joining Yorkshire Carnegie, taking part in the storied Varsity Match against Cambridge in 2017.

Moor will remain close to the Arrows as part of the club’s advisory team.

“Dan has been a total professional as a member of our club, even dating back several years to our amateur days as the Ontario Blues in the Canadian Rugby Championship,” Arrows GM Mark Winokur said in a statement.

“Dan’s work ethic, dedication to his craft, and leadership abilities have meant quite a lot to this team in our first two years in Major League Rugby, and we will miss his on-field play just as much.”
