NANAIMO — A late night fire at a business on Bowen Rd. has triggered a police investigation.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue and RCMP responded to reports of a fire at Motion Specialties in the 2500 block of Bowen Rd. just after midnight on Thursday, June 18.

Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW a chain link fence had been cut and a backpack with garbage and debris was found near the fire.

“For whatever reason, (a person) took some paper, shoved it in the side of wooden pallets and set it on fire causing an extensive and very hot blaze,” O’Brien said.

Police believe someone was either sleeping in or using the loading dock area after hours.

Minimal damage was done to the inside of the building, limited to just small amounts of smoke and water.

“It’s a malicious act of arson and we’re currently checking for any cameras in the area and we’re hoping somebody can assist us in identifying who this person is,” O’Brien said.

Police are hoping they can identify who owns the backpack and potentially started the fire.

If anyone has information, they’re encouraged to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250 754 2345.
