Sports courts and fields re-opening across Nanaimo

Jun 18, 2020 | 2:17 PM

NANAIMO — Chances to get outside for outdoor recreation are slowly expanding.

Sports fields in the City of Nanaimo re-opened on Thursday, June 18. Sports courts are expected to be open by Monday, June 22.

This includes Beban Park, Merle Logan and Serauxmen sports fields. Volleyball and basketball courts are also included, though the Maffeo Sutton Park basketball court remains closed due to construction.

Several key restrictions are in place.

Groups over 50 people aren’t allowed. Neither are contact or competitive sports. A release from the City of Nanaimo specified field use can only be for drills, skills and modified training.

“Please keep play casual, non-competitive and non-contact,” facility director Art Groot said in the release. “Now is a great time to train as we cannot allow competitive games.”

Indoor rec facilities including pools, arenas, the Harewood multi-use court and lacrosse boxes remain closed.
