Province confirms 12 new COVID-19 cases, no deaths for fifth straight day

NANAIMO — COVID-19 continues to remain flat on Vancouver Island.

No new cases of the virus on the Island were confirmed by the province on Wednesday, June 10. Across B.C., 12 new people tested positive.

There are currently 185 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. but none on Vancouver Island.

The province’s streak of no COVID-19 related fatalities continued since Friday, June 5.

In a joint statement from provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix, the province touted its continued monitoring of the virus, which actively tracks potential community outbreaks.

“Through our active surveillance and testing, we have recently identified two community clusters of COVID-19 associated with large family connections,” the release said. “This tells us that our public health teams are quickly identifying new cases. It also tells us that while our overall provincial cases may be low, COVID-19 is active and spreading in our communities.”

The province’s testing program continues with people able to get a COVID-19 test should they experience symptoms of cold or flu.

However an increase in testing has not been met with a decrease in precautions needed to stop the spread of the virus.

“A COVID-19 test when you are asymptomatic is ineffective and is not your passport to increase your social circle. Following all of the rules for safe physical distancing and wearing a cloth mask when you can’t keep those distances is.”

Nearly 2,700 cases of COVID-19 were detected in British Columbia to date, including 130 on Vancouver Island.
